1979-82 Assistant Lecturer, Aalborg University. 1983-85 Research Fellow, Danish Research Council for the Humanities. 1986-94 Senior Curator, Fiskeri- og Søfartsmuseet, Esbjerg. 1994-99 Research Professor, Centre for Maritime and Regional History (FOS / Aarhus University).
2000-06 Professor, University of Southern Denmark. Achievements: global 10-year research project HMAP (total 15 million USD); established Structured PhD programme in Maritime Studies; secured funds for endowed chair in Marine Archaeology; served four years as Chair of Danish Research Council for the Humanities
2006-2008 Rector (Vice-Chancellor), Roskilde University. Achievements: financial turn-around from deficit of 8% on annual budget to surplus in three years; new departmental structures with a focus on cross-disciplinary research and teaching fields; increased level of annual external funding, from 60 to 100 million DKK in two years; a new study programme for arts and sciences: design studies, yearly intake of 200 students; Danish government funds of 50 million DKK for a centre for the experience industry; a 30 million DKK partnership contract with the Region of Zealand.

Teaching
BA module in Maritime History at the University of Aarhus. Foundation Course and Maritime History module at the University of Southern Denmark. 2002-06 Director of Research School for Studies in Marine and Coastal Environment, Heritage and Sustainable Tourism (MAST). I have supervised a total of 14 doctoral students. External PhD examiner at the University of Glasgow 2001, University of Tromsø 2005, Utrecht 2008, University of Stirling 2011. 1998-2006 external examiner BA and MA levels (history), Universities of Copenhagen, Roskilde, Odense, and Aalborg, and since 2000 external examiner BA and MA levels (history), University of Greenland.
